Brother MFC-J850DN Setup Guide

Step 1: Unboxing and Assembly

  • Unpack the device and remove all protective materials.
  • Remove the orange protective tape from the ink cartridges.
  • Install the ink cartridges into their designated slots and press on them until they click into place.
  • Close the ink cartridge cover.
  • Open the paper tray, expand it, and adjust the paper guides to the size of the paper you will be using.

Step 2: Software Installation

  • Insert the included installation CD into your computer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Brother printer software.
  • Select the “MFC-J850DN” model when prompted.
  • Connect the printer to your computer using the USB cable or wirelessly (see below for wireless setup).

Step 3: Wireless Setup

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to “Network” > “Wi-Fi Setup” > “Quick Setup.”
  • Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password.
  • The printer will connect to your network.
  • On your computer, open the printer software and add the printer by selecting “Network” and then the printer’s name.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Printer Not Connecting

  • Check if the printer is powered on and connected to your computer or network.
  • Make sure the USB cable is properly connected (if using a USB connection).
  • Verify that your Wi-Fi network is active and the printer is within range (if using a wireless connection).
  • Restart the printer and your computer.

No Ink

  • Check the ink levels on the printer’s control panel or in the printer software.
  • If the ink levels are low, replace the empty cartridges with new ones.
  • Make sure the ink cartridges are properly installed and clicked into place.

Paper Jam

  • Open the paper tray and remove any jammed paper.
  • Close the paper tray and press the “Paper” button on the control panel to clear the jam.
  • If the jam persists, turn off the printer and unplug it. Then, gently remove the jammed paper from the inside of the printer.

Poor Print Quality

  • Check the print settings and ensure that they are appropriate for the type of paper you are using.
  • Clean the print heads by following the instructions in the printer software.
  • Try using different ink cartridges to eliminate the possibility of a defective cartridge.

Other Issues

  • Duplex Printing Not Working: Make sure the duplex option is selected in the print settings and that the printer has enough paper in the tray.
  • Slow Printing Speed: Check for any network or computer issues that may be slowing down the print process.
  • Scanning Not Working: Ensure that the scanner lid is properly closed and that the ADF (if applicable) is clean and free of any obstructions.
